The objective of CRHP is
to work with the poor and marginalized people and
enable them to achieve an acceptable level of health
through the primary health care approach. Through this
approach people are enabled to improve their health
and lives in a holistic sense. The emphasis is on
building capacity, empowering people and working
towards achieving equity and integration of all health
services. The overall success of this project has
prompted CRHP to focus increasing attention on its
role as a model project for both government and
non-government organizations throughout the world.
With a wealth of experiences and lessons
learned over
the years CRHP founded the Jamkhed
Institute for
Training and Research in Community Health and
Population in 1992 in order to formalize the training
that had been provided over the years. Residential
courses are offered throughout the year for
individuals and
organizations on Community Based
Health & Development (CBHD). The courses are
participatory and offer practical training to carry
out CBPHC projects in virtually any setting.
Instructors include CRHP staff, national and
international public health experts, and members of
the project villages including VHWs and community
group members. Participants can also learn from each
other as they come from diverse cultures and
backgrounds with a variety of work experiences.
The training center receives both national and
international participants. To date, over 2,000
international (from over 100 countries) and 9,000
national health and development workers from
government, non-government and faith-based
organizations have been trained. Participants include
grassroots workers, doctors, nurses, government
workers, administrators, and students. They receive
training in the principles and practices of
community-based health and development, leadership
skills and personal development.
A wide range of courses are offered throughout the
year including diploma, certification, short-term
exposure courses and custom tailored training to meet
the specific needs of organizations. The courses in
our training institute last anywhere from 2-months
(diploma) to 1 week (short courses).
CRHP conducts mobile training in other areas of India
and abroad through which community volunteers and CRHP
staff travel to sponsoring agencies so as to orient a
larger proportion of their staff in the C-CBPHC
approach. Follow-up and evaluation of trainees is also
conducted through mobile training.
Research
Scientific and community-based research is conducted
in project villages on issues of interest to the
communities and to CRHP, including the impact and
effectiveness of CBPHC. The villagers are actively
involved through PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal),
which is another way for them to learn new knowledge
and skills that they can use to improve their
understanding and initiate critical analysis of their
situation. A methodology for community-based research,
which applies many of the principles and practices of
CBPHC to the research process, is being actively
developed at CRHP.
Topics have included:
Pregnancy outcomes (home
and hospital deliveries)
The impact of
community-based PHC on the stigma of leprosy
Prevalence of HIV/AIDS
infection in pregnant women
and
in the community
Prevalence of STIs
The need for
hospitalization (conditions and frequency)
Nutrition of children
